EARLY 90’s 12-FT CATBOAT by BLOGER / PAYSON
This boat was professionally built in the early 90’s by a builder in New Orleans. It is now in need of some restoration to get it back in sailing condition. The design is patterned after the famous Beetle Cat, only it was developed for easy construction. The boat has hard chines and is 12 feet long and six feet wide. Because of these design features, it is a very stable boat. The rudder and centerboard allow for easy sailing in shallow water. This boat was designed by the famous Phil Bolger as part
of the instant boat series and refined using prototypes built by Harold “Dynamite” Payson. New or fully restored boats of this type easily sell for at least three times what I am asking. My problem is that I’m not going to get it done this year at my current rate so I must sell. The boat is located in Yorktown, Virginia. It is being stored inside to protect it from the environment.
The project of restoring the boat to its original beauty has been started. The hardware and wood trim pieces were removed and a good bit of the sanding on both hull and deck is complete. Some of the wood floor boards and seat will need replacing. The cockpit coaming is still in good shape. The rudder and centerboard are good and only need to be painted in order to match the rest of the boat. To help you finish the project, I will include a roll of fiberglass cloth (for the hull and deck) and a gallon of West System Epoxy. Several quarts of paint are also included. All you need to do is some sanding, lay the glass out, and paint everything. The mast, boom, and gaff are in excellent shape with only a few areas needing paint touch-up. The sail is in good shape with no holes, no repairs, and only one rust spot. There are two reef points on the sail, so sailing it in a nor’easter would not be a problem! All of the blocks are Harken or other ball bearing brands. Some extras such as a cockpit tent cover, sail cover, and anchor are included. I will also include a 34-lb thrust electric motor (no battery though) for those light air drifters or to get away from the dock. Add to all this, I’m including a galvanized trailer to get the boat to and from the water. A book on how to build the Instant Catboat signed by the author is included.
The asking price for everything is $1100. I can be reached via e-mail at hotrudderedbum@cox.net or by phone at 757-810-3970.
FOR SALE: 1940s or 50s era Rhode Island 13'6" Cat.
This catboat is a 1950s or late 1940s , 13ft. 6in. early 40s, Rhode Island built Cape Cod style catboat. The boat is similar in design to Edson Schock boats and was built in the early 40s or 50s on Salt Pond in southern Rhode Island. There is confusion on who actually built this boat, but the second owner purchased the boat at a Succotash Rd. boat yard on the Salt Pond in June of 1957, and sailed around Narragansett Bay, Cape Cod and the Vineyards. The boat was later sailed on Lake George in New York. Originally the boat had red Egyptian cotton sails and the cuddy cabin was smaller with no portholes and a rounded front. A builder’s plate was on the boat at that time but was lost during cabin overhaul in the 60s. I am the third and present owner, and I purchased the boat in 1980 and sailed her out of Wickford Harbor in Rhode Island until a refit was required and a complete overhaul was performed in 1994. We moved to mid Missouri in 1996, and I have been sailing the boat on the Lake of the Ozarks. She is cedar on oak, with a new keel, centerboard trunk, lower transom, deadwood, sister frames, and was re-fastening in 1994. She has a Thurston sail, oak mast hoops, red bronze and brass fittings, cuddy cabin with oval ports, varnished decks cabin and cockpit sides, cedar on oak carvel hull, barn door rudder and a British seagull motor and trailer. I am currently searching for difinitive origins for this boat and Any information regarding this early catboat would be welcome, and would be added to the historical information available on early Rhode Island catboats.
The boat is available and ready for the water at $4,500 or best reasonable offer. John MacIver, PO Box 653, Stover, MO 65078. (573) 377-2775 or e-mail macivj@wildblue.net.
